coalition of spiritual and political movements – provided therapists can
manage to reach out to other people and groups. Politics can be reframed as

In this interview, Kathy Laverty engages with Andrew Samuels on the topics of Psychotherapy and Politics, in the wake of his visit to the 2015 ITAA Conference in Sydney, Australia as a keynote speaker. Andrew Samuels has, for 40 years, been evolving a unique blend of post-Jungian, relational psychoanalytic and humanistic approaches to therapy work. He is recognised internationally as a leading commentator from a psychotherapeutic perspective on political and social problems. His work on the father, sexuality, spirituality and countertransference has also been widely appreciated. He is a Founding Board Member of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis, past chair of the UK Council for Psychotherapy, and co-founder of Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility (UK). He is currently Professor of Analytical Psychology at Essex University and holds visiting chairs at New York, London, Macau and Roehampton Universities.
